My Grandmother's Home Vimmerby Sweden |
|
Both of my parents were born in Sweden, my mother in the South in Vimmerby and my father in the North in Lulia, Norbotten. My fathers' family farm was only 75 kilometers from the Arctic Circle and every time we travel to the area we always make a visit to the sign of demarcation.
This area is rich in timber and reindeer - the two largest industries in Northern Sweden. The staple meat as you guessed is reindeer, beef was very rare until recently and the staple side is Mandel (almond) Potatoes. These delicate potatoes are colored like Yukon Gold but are only finger length in size with a very sweet taste. Swedes mound them on the plate. Several years ago Steve and I took the boys to visit the family farm and we sat down to a wonderful dinner of reindeer tenderloin and the Mandel Potatoes. Steve observed that the relatives were painstakingly pealing every potato on the plate before eating. As Steve was popping the whole potato in his mouth (skin and all) he asked my Swedish family why they throw the skin away as it has most of the potatoes nutrients. My relatives replied - "we only give the skin of the potatoes to the pigs in Sweden". Steve learned a valuable lesson in cultural differences.
Scandinavians specialize in the visual presentation of their foods. They taste with their eyes! Scandinavians have always been curious as to why we Americans hide the beautiful food in our Sandwiches by placing another piece of bread on top of the ingredients. The Smorgasbord (Swedish) or Koldt Bord (Danish Norwegian) translation Scandinavian Buffet, is a variety of traditional foods with beautiful presentation.
